Meta might be forced to sell Instagram & WhatsApp

A court in the USA has ruled that the Federal Trade Commission (the FTC) is able to go ahead with a lawsuit aiming to force Meta to sell both WhatsApp and Instagram. The FTC believes that Meta (or Facebook as it was known at the time) bought the apps in a bid to eliminate competition, giving itself a monopoly.

This isn’t the first time the FTC has gone after Mark Zuckerberg’s company. Last year, the case was dismissed but has since been revised and allowed to proceed, with District of Columbia Judge James Boasberg saying that it is, “far more robust and detailed than before”.

What are your thoughts? Is it right that Meta shouldn’t be allowed to monopolise social media, or should they be allowed to continue despite their scale and influence?
